Presta valve conversion?

I've just bought a Chinese Raleigh clone for spares.

The wheels have Schrader valve type holes and inner tubes in them, but they appear to have some sort of Presta valve converter screwed in to them. The trouble is the valves leak.

Would it be best to buy new 'converter valves' or is it possible to buy Schrader types that screw in to the inner tube?

Inner tubes are fairly cheap so should I just get a couple of new ones with the valves already fitted?

I am not quite sure what you are trying to say here, are you telling us that you have Schrader drilled rims that have the grommet fitted to neck them down to Presta?

As I can't see how that effects how the valves function.

Or - do you actualy have what is known as a woods valve innertube?

In which case you can either replace the rubber tube in the valve or just put new tubes in with a different valve.

If you have the genuine Woods valves, some times PRKs (Rema Tip Top in particular) come with a little rubber tubes to repair them. Or Halfords sell the more modern Woods valves for about a pound for 2.

If they leak, there is something wrong. I took my R20 out for a ride yesterday, the first time since last October and the tyres were still hard and it has Woods valves.

Yes - they're Woods/Dunlop valves, I've just done a Google search. I didn't even know they existed!

If they're that bad I'll just get some more inner tubes.

You have Woods valves. Bin them and replace with Schrader equipped tubes. Woods valves suck ass.

Correction

Woods valves BLOW (air out of the tube usually)
trying to get Woods valves to SUCK (take in air) is a challenge

If you want to keep them though I've got a tray full of the little rubber tubes that act as the "valve" on the insert
