Sorry, had to laugh, but I just hope that doesn't happen to me!

Bugger, thats damned unlucky! So did you manage to get her number? ;)
Depending what type of van you have, it may be worth you getting a Fuelsure cap; http://www.fuelsure.com/
Ive never put petrol into a diesel, but having bought my first diesel in a good few years earlier this year i decided to get one. As you have pointed out, it only takes a momentary distraction or lapse of concentration and its too late.

In the meanwhile, my lawn could do with a trim if you fancy using up some of that petrol?

On the one occasion when I pulled the same stunt, my car conked out right in the middle of a big junction where I sat feeling like a dickhead waiting for the AA. During the 30 minutes I was there, I was amazed at the number of offers of help I received; one from a bunch of lads who emerged pissed from the nearby pub and wanted to push me (I declined politely) one from a very attractive WPC and one from a young lad who came back five minutes later with a can of petrol! Several other drives pulled alongside to ask if I was OK! Amazing!

Hope you haven't broken your engine
Diesel engines operate at very high fuel pressure, the fuel pump/valves rely on the lubricity of diesel to stop them grinding.

There was no woman was there. It's a cover for the fact you just plain pumped the wrong fuel in.

Scaremongers. The engine will have stopped running long before any damage was done to the distributor pump and in any case the petrol/diesel mix will still have had some lubricating effect.

Went in to fill the van up with diesel this afternoon, and there was this woman hurrying back across the garage forecourt to her car, I couldn't work out if her legs were extra long or her skirt was extra short but bye f**k she was pretty, and seeing her trying to run in high heels was some sight

Anyway undistracted as I was, I filled the van up, paid and left, about a mile down the road, chug chug chug I was slowing down rather rapidly with blue smoke coming out of the back. Pulled into a lay bye and.....Arrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh ....

Three hours later I finally managed to get a mate to tow me the few miles home.

You filthy so and so

If it's an older van you should be able to pick up a second hand DP off a scrappie for reasonable money. Or get yours overhauled.
