Price of campsites in the UK

What's the rule-of-thumb price range these days for a single tent, 1 night, 1 person? I know it'll vary by season and area so just a rough guide would be helpful.

I just looked at a few places in Cumbria and it was £15 - £20 per night. That seemed pricey to me but didn't know if it was indicative, or a seasonally inflated regional price.

It could be worse - I was asked for thirty quid ten years ago in Cornwall at one camp site.

I paid £12 at Braithwaite near Keswick three weeks ago and £12 at Flamborough at Easter. The Camping and Caravan Club owned sites offer low tariffs for cyclists and back packers. The web site claims that prices start at £2.45. I paid around six quid at some of their sites in the Lake District and on the East coast five or six years ago. Apparently there's also a pledge to always accommodate back packers and cyclists even when the sites are full in recognition of the roots of the club.

Why not try Scotland, if I read it right you can lob your tent up almost anywhere for free?

I try to avoid the bigger campsites which seem to cost a fortune but then I've always been a fan of the 'Tap and Toilet' type of sites.
I'd certainly avoid any campsite with an 'on site club' or a 'children's play area' whilst I'm on a bike or backpacking (I don't think I will be able to backpack anymore but I hope to get back to touring on the bike)

I paid £7 in Settle last autumn, that seems about right to me, it included a lovely bathroom/shower block too.

Price as well as sun is why I mostly tour in Spain, there I get a 3 star hotel room with buffet breakfast, enabling pilfering of food for lunch, for the same price as patch of grass in the UK.

I'd love to cycle around more of the UK but the cost (primarily) always sees me catching a cheap flight.

I'm currently in a hotel in Spain, 40 E for half board with half a litre of wine thrown in ;-) back to the thread. Cheapest campsite I found in UK was £5 for one in snowdonia off the A5.

If you come to Denmark they build the huts almost on the beach and they are free. I know of half a dozen within an hours ride of my house and they are free. I was in one the other afternoon. I will have to find the photos.

The prices quoted in this thread are pretty close to my experiences: there are auberges in Spain where you can get a room with two beds for the price of a pitch on a campsite in the UK. Spanish hotels at €40 for a twin are common: French campsites, esp munis, are a fiver or thereabouts. This means that driving up for a camping trip in Scotland is more than flying to a hotel trip in Spain, or pretty much so.....

I work on about £10 being par, for a site with shower, or about £5 for field, toilet & tap.
Camping and Caravan Club sites have a "backpacker" rate, usually about £8 for non-members.
Sites that say £15-£20 on the website are probably aiming that at a couple with a car and big tent, and may actually charge less when you turn up on a bike, but don't count on it.

Last week in Scotland (not counting wild), the cheapest was £4 (field by beach , tap & toilet 300m down the road), and the most expensive was £12 (including hut with sink, table, seating, kettle/toaster, for hiding from the midges in).

Scotland wild camping is "be responsible" - not close to housing or on cultivated fields,sport pitches etc, and take everything away with you.
