Mamil and couldn't care less

As a bit of a mamil, I set myself a couple of targets this year: to cycle 100 miles in a day and to break an average of 17mph over 20 miles. I achieved the first earlier this year, and on Wednesday I managed 17.6 for the twenty. I then sat down to watch the Tour De France individual time trial live. As the more astute of you may have observed, the elite athletes of Le Tour were a damn sight faster over the same distance. I'm still cuffed to have obtained the targets I set for myself this year (I love the apparent dichotomy of achieving such a sate of fitness, whereby I may be out of breath when I exert myself, which may be viewed as over-exertion, but know it's just my body doing what it has to do to get the oxygen flowing for the effort, and that as soon as I slow, I'll be back to breathing normally - if that makes sense), and yet I still find myself watching those guys doing stuff I can only fantasise about ever doing and thinking I'm a doddery old cretin in his fifties staving off the decrepitude of old age by cycling. Oh, well ... Vive Le Tour!

It's a target to aim for, that's all. I'll never be as good as a pro cyclist, yet what's the current record for getting up Ventoux? About an hour? I did it in about three hours.
There's no way that Beckham is a mere three times better a footballer than I am, but Lance is only three times faster up Ventoux than me. Plus, I wasn't drugged off my tits at the time
That's one of the many things I love about cycling. There's no way you could turn up at Wembley with a coupla dozen mates for a kickabout, but Alpe D'Huez is available for anyone to ride up.
