I have bought some PC own brand ink for my Canon iP4200 as it was less than half price. I haven't used it yet and am wondering if there is a downside I should be aware of before I do.

I have an iP4300 with which I use compatible ink. The original cartridges were chipped, so I've had to remove the chip from each and transfer it to the new compatible cartridges each time I put a new one in (not that arduous, a bit fiddly first time). There is no software ink monitoring via the chip now - in fact I've turned the nags off as it kept saying 'unable to monitor ink level/this cartridge has run out' or something like that, so it's a question of checking ink levels manually from time to time and never letting a cartridge run bone dry before swapping it out.

I previously tried a continuous ink system with it, but it wasn't a success - very messy, and the instructions that came with it were poor so I was never sure I'd got it set up correctly.

I expect your guarantee will be up the spout using compatibles in this way - not something that worried me, given the cost of the printer originally and the amount I would have spent on branded ink over its lifetime.

...and I hate to say it, but Canons are notoriously vulnerable. Once bitten, twice shy - I accept the cost and buy the real McCoy now (tho' I do go to Amazon or ebay to get the best possible deal). It depends at least in part on how much you use it. If you do a *lot* of printing, it might be worth considering investing in a lazer - the refills are much more expensive, but they last a helluva lot longer.

I have a Canon Pixma iP 1200 but I only refill the black ink cartridge. I've used loads of different makes and never had any problems. Judging by the posts above, it looks like I must have been lucky.

Other than the continuous ink system (a messy adventure) I've not had any problems using compatibles either, but I have stuck with one make throughout.

i brought jet-tec for my canon iP5200 which were ok until i tried to print photos; they all came out very dull with a sepia tinge. Got so fed up with that and wasn't prepared to pay nearly £80 (from PCworld) to put proper canon stuff in it that i brought one of those new Kodak printers. It is wireless which is great for the other members of the klan and what's more the ink for black and white is a total of £14.98. The kodak printer is noisy compared to the canon on start up but prints just as quick and the quality of photo printing whilst not up to the canon standard is perfectly acceptable for snaps.
