I have a problem with my phoneline and internet at the moment - don't know where the problem could be.
Here's a synopsis.
I have one of these connected into the phone socket in the wall...

When I connect the phone line only, the phone works fine.
When I then connect the ADSL line, the phone line stops working and the internet works OK.
If I have only the ADSL line connected the internet works fine.
I have replaced the adapter above with 4 other brand new adapters (talktalk sent me several of them when I started with them) and all of them behave the same.

I'm really at a loss. What could the problem be?
Any ideas? Thanks.

Has this problem just started at random or have you changed something?

Have you any other phones plugged in at home?

Have you got a new-type socket, or have you added an iplate?

The problem has only arisen last couple of days.
There is another landline phone upstairs.
Not a new-type socket. No iplate fitted.

I wonder if the ADSL cable is damaged in some way. Anyway, I will have to contact talktalk although I doubt it's their fault, as the phoneline into the house works OK.

Is the phone self powered with it's own mains plug or is it powered from the phone line ?
Try plugging the phone from upstairs into the filter downstairs.
Do you know how to log into the config page of your router ? If so look at the status and check for the attenuation
value and snr and post them here (may take some ferreting as my zoom x7n provides a lot of information but is
not entirely user friendly when trying to find things)

I think your problem could be TalkTalk. On return from Italy, I wanted a reasonably priced internet/phone package and got a TalkTalk contract. Since installing, it has been a complete disaster. I can 'see' the router, it has a strong signal throughout the house, but the connection to the internet is patchy, sometimes down for 3-4 hours at a time. In addition, the phone frequently dies mid call. In summary, I am glad I am moving house and will cancel the contract early.

We even had a TalkTalk engineer visit and he agreed that there was a problem, but could not identify what it was.

I phoned up talktalk - they reckon the most likely cause is that the ADSL cable could be frayed (or damaged in some way) and causing some sort of loopback problem (cable goes under carpets and doorways etc). They suggest I replace the ADSL with another one and see if it solves the problem.

Hi
The downstairs (cordless) phone has its own mains power supply. I tried plugging the upstairs (old-style corded) phone into the filter and it also gets disconnected when the internet cable is connected.
I do know how to log into the config page of the router - I'll give it a go, once I've tried replacing the ADSL cable with a new one. Thanks.

So er exactly how long is this cable? This is the one from the filter to the router ?
Hmm might be a netgear router in which case type 192.168.0.1 into the browser address bar and if it throws up a login box go for admin /password or possibly admin/admin then look under status.

Cable is about 7metres. Mine's a Huwei (sp?) router.

Does it happen when everything else is unplugged from other phone sockets except for the phone and router in the adsl socket? I think you're meant to be using filters on all your phone sockets btw not just the one the ADSL connects to.

The underfloor wires are meant to be terrible for getting mashed up by people/furniture. Most installers insist on going over skirtingboards and through walls etc if you dont DIY it

Find the master socket. this is the one with the screws in it looking like this (usually)

unscrew the screws and slide the front off.

inside looks like this

now connect the filter to the internal plug withinin the master socket (highlighted in red) and try both landline and internet.

What you have done, is to disconnect the ring main in your house. No extensions will work whatsoever. This will tell you if you have a ring main socket/wiring issue or if you have a line fault. (Talktalk can be exceptionally difficult to convince on this matter, it took us 5 days to convince them with my parents in-laws home and it was a line fault).

If everything works fine then you absolutely have a line fault and need an engineer visit (if you know all your equipment works fine which it probably does unless you have mice). Your providor is responsible for everything in your home leading up to and including this master socket and there will be no charge for it. Argue with them on this point if they try it on (they did with my in-laws). You are resposible for everything after this socket. If it works fine, then you have an internal wiring issue and its up to you where you go from there.

Ahem you're assuming everyone has that sort of socket. They don't.
I'd suggest that as well as getting at the snr and attenuation data in the router they take the router and plug it straight into the filter without the 7m cable or if the 7m cable is actually between the socket and the filter then take the phone, modem and filter down to the socket and plug in there and see if that makes a difference.
