Well, Teresa May has messed things up, turned a certain victory into a worse position than she started out with...

And this has got me thinking. Who else has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in such a spectacular manner?

The first one that springs to mind for me is Gerald Ratner. He was on the gravy train, absolutely coining it, and all he had to do was keep his trap shut and he was set for life. But he couldn't do that, and his famous "crap" comment with respect to one of his products brought the whole thing crashing down.

Another one is Ford. They decided to create a new brand, Edsel, named in honour of Henry Fords son. They spent an absolute bomb, billions in today's money, developing a technically quite decent product. Then at the last minute they bestowed it with a grille that was hideous. Once the press saw it the design was likened to the female genitalia, and the damage was done. Few were sold, and after two years of dire sales the plug was pulled, costing Ford a mint.

So what other examples can you think of where defeat has been snatched from the jaws of almost certain victory?

Hitler and Nazi germany. They might have won the war had Hitler not been in charge of military strategy.

And the US economy is on an absolute roll...

Plus he was, and still is, a billionaire.

Nah, he doesn't qualify. We need people or organisations that were on the crest of a wave, but who then ruined it through either stupidity or inexplicable miscalculation.

Perhaps Raleigh would be a corking example, when their lady boss of the time decided mountain bikes would be a fad and they wouldn't bother with them. By the time the board realised how wrong she was all the big slices of the MTB sales pie had been nabbed by others, and Raleigh finally went into terminal decline.
