I know it pays to shop around but I gulped when I looked on the Evans website today to find a SRAM 9 Speed Chain Link would cost me £11.99.

See, http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sram/powerlink-gold-chain-connector-9-speed-ec008054

I went down to Cycle Surgery in Spitalfileds to see if they had any comparable chain link and the same SRAM Gold link was........

Nil.
Nada, Zilch, Nothing. They just gave it to me. I have no idea if they normally do this.

So, hats off to Cycle Surgery. and Evans, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Decathlon are usually a good source of cheap chain links. Their "own brand" ones are actually KMC (were when I bought one, anyway)

It's 11.99 for a pack of 4, so £3 per link, which isn't overly excessive.
Ribble do them for £1.95 (or 10% less as part of a bigger order), and Chainreaction are £4 for 3.

when i go to the LBS for that sort of thing, a cleat bolt last time, the regulat shop types pause to thin and then the mechanics hand appears from the back with the relevant piece

Evans are a shop, any proper LBS is something more

You should try getting bits that fall off cameras. It's not unusual to pay £15 for a tiny bit of plastic made by Nikon or Canon.
