In the local paper today:

What is interesting in the article, is the way that he watched people waiting for an opertunity or knew who the owner was so

There was a time when stealing a bike was a bit of a joke.
When was that  200BC

The only joke I could see was this line
None of these bike offences would have been determined, but for his own honesty

It be interesting to know how well secured the stolen bikes were, from what I have seen some people are quite happy to splash a £1000 plus on a bike then only spend £5 on a crappy lock.

Just a guess but I wouldn't be surprised if the
£1,600 high-tech Chris Boardman
stolen outside
the Mud Dock bike shop and café
wasn't even locked up at all!

a half-decent thief will get through any lock in seconds - New York special included.

If you can't afford to lose it, keep an eye on it.

A half-decent thief would take a lot lot longer than that trying get through my Squire SS65CS.

You reckon? Plumber's liquid nitrogen and a ball peen hammer maybe? There is ALWAYS a way for a well equipped thief ufortunately.

Anyway, good to read some of the comments, sounds like people will be waiting for his prison exit!

That would be a well equiped "decent" thief, as he would need to get past both my d locks first and the motion sensitive alarms, with the bike located underneath my office window. A half decent thief would normally be equipped with croppers more than enough for most bike locks.

I see a lot of bikes locked up with combination locks. IMHO they are no more secure than a piece of string a bike thief could crack the lock and walk off with your bike in broad daylight in front of thousands of people. Nobody is going to tell if that is your bike or not, and the method you would use to crack the lock would look no more than if you were the person dialling in the combination.

I think this guy's conscience is getting the better of him.

stealing 70 bikes worth a staggering £40,000

Eh? What's staggering about that? I've a shed with bikes of 10% of that value in right now.

Every one is worth more than I paid for my last car.

except "Mr Wincup was eating in the café. Irwin kept him under surveillance and, in an opportune moment, cut the bike's chain and cycled away."

Heh
My bike sits behind my desk - one advantage of having a Brompton.

I do have a lock - I use it on the train to lock it to the luggage rack if I'm not able to sit in the same carriage; but otherwise, where I go, my B goes.
