You could say that. The difference though is that Avatar is a ripping yarn and although it's not an original story I enjoyed it and was happy to get a copy on DVD when it came out. With Prometheus I doubt I'll bother.... unless ArDee is right and there is an extra reel which explains what was going on.

I managed 30 minutes of Avatar. I thought it was dreadful!

We may have to reconsider the effort now involved in going to see it. I was looking forward to the 3D and the 'same universe as Alien' story line but it may not be worth the effort. I have read some good reviews though so I might feel differently when I am more confident about going out without further injury.

My thoughts exactly. I thoroughly enjoyed avatar, thought it was a very entertaining watch. Prometheus, not so.

Would be very interested to hear your views. I was slightly confused by the very mixed reviews and as I'm fairly easily entertained by films thought it would be a safe bet.

If I do go I will report back.

I tend to be quite happy suspending disbelief for the sake of an entertaining film and not worrying about Prometheus being directly tied to the Alien series, it is only set in the 'same universe' not necessarily a part of the same story.
I would view it in the same light as, say, Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. The same universe and background but not necessarily a direct connection between them.

It's Ridley Scott, expect 6 more versions to be release over the next 20 years.
Plus the sequels. I'm sure it won't surprise anyone that they've left it open for more.

They reckoned that he cut a huge amount out of it to get the 15 certificate. That move was worth $80 million in box office takings. I see this film as the beginning of a series of them to run in tandem. No spoilers from me, but I saw it at the weekend and enjoyed it for what it was - a grand spectacle and a feeder for what comes next.

Well, that was two hours of my life I'll never get back.
I'd read the reviews, and was well aware that the plot was a little shakey, and was also aware that it wasn't directly related to the Alien series.
So, it was with an open mind that I sat down to enjoy the film.

It's not so much that the plot has holes, it's just laughable at how poorly written it is. OK, so it's a sci-fi film, you have to expect a bit of inconsistency, but this is just plain stupid.
The acting is good, the effects are good and it's beautifully filmed but the film as a whole is very, very poor in my opinion.

Arch, I'm not sure that watching the Alien series will really prepare you for this, they are fantastic films and not even in the sights of the train smash that is Prometheus.
H.R Giger allegedly designed some of the set, and although reminiscent of his earlier work, it hasn't got that delicious, sinister darkness that the Alien sets had.
All very disappointing IMO

I watched Prometheus on saturday. You saved me writing a review as yours hits the nail on the head.

The space ship at the end though, looked like a flying dog turd.

I reckon the best film ever to be made will be called: "Citizen Pocahontas Flew Over the Wicker Man in Space, 3D II"

Went to see Prometheus last night and was a bit disappointed with it to be honest. The behaviour of the characters was pretty illogical in places and they jumped to conclusions so bizzarre it felt as though they'd edited out a reel of the film.

I don't think you could call it a bad film (it is very well made) but it wasn't what I expected.

Anyone else seen it yet? What did you think?
I've heard that the best of the film has been left on the cutting room floor.
i'm now of the opinion that i want to wait for the directors cut dvd.

+1 & why didn't they just run to the side out of it's path?

I was thinking 'it's a Ridley Scott film, it ought to be at least ok' it was only after that I remembered he also made Robin Hood a couple of years ago.
