Someone was saying the other day that the shops are full of game. Apparently a lot of the celeb chefs are telling people that it is nutricious, delicious and low fat, not farmed and very tasty.

How many people on here eat game? How do you cook it?

If you don't eat game then tell us why not. We could try and persuade you, and share some recipes at the same time.

(all this prompted by a brace of pheasants braised in cider and apples about to appear on the Cube family table in about half an hour)

I swallowed one of the Monopoly pieces once....

I don't tend to, but only because it doesn't tend to fit in my 50p-for-the-meat-bit meal budget - I mainly eat mince and reduced sausages....

It's something I might well order when eating out, as a treat. Had a rather good rabbit pie in a pub the other week.

With a bit more money coming in now, I might well treat myself sometimes at the farmers' market. Although I'm also a fairly impatient cook, so have to get into the way of doing the more slow cooking stuff.

I love game!

I buy venison from the local butcher and leave it to rest in the fridge until it goes a nice brown colour, then I make venison stew. Lovely! He also does Vension sausages. It's not that expensive because it's local(ish), from the New Forest.

I absolutely love game, Dad goes out hunting as a hobby and come home with all sorts  Pheasant and Rabbit are my favorites.

I eat game regularly. Much prefer it to anything else.

By the way Arch, oven-ready game is far from expensive. Our local poultry butcher is selling oven-ready partridge at £2-60 a brace.

Cheers for that - there is a game butcher in York, so I should be able to get it - but I have been on a very tight budget until recently. How many meals do you get out of a partridge?

Depends how much you eat:biggrin:

Seriously, one partridge for one meal. However, if you stretch to pheasant you could get three or four meals out of that for very little extra outlay. Don't forget the carcasses make superb stock for soups.

My dad usually give a fair bit away for free, as well as fish (trout) so if anyone lives in the countryside they should ask around as usually people who hunt and fish for a hobby have way to much to consume themselves. Our garage freezer is full of frozen game and fish, just a thought.

Just watch out for the shot

True. If I get round to getting a freezer, I could freeze casserole and stuff...

Arch PM me. I'm coming over to York next weekend and will drop a brace of pheasant off for you if you fancy? Darkstar's right. Sometimes we shooters can't give it away, but love promoting the idea.

Lincs is very much partridge shooting country though isn't it? Woodcock aside, partidge is my absolute favourite, with a deep creamy breast and a hungry diner's plateful per bird. In terms of shooting they also provide some of the most spectacular sport going.
