Hi

Someone told me that it's best to get a provisional driving licence ASAP because the sooner you get one, then if you pass your driving test, the cost of insurance is reduced. i.e. the longer you've held your provisional licence, it works in your favour when it comes to car insurance.

Is this correct? Anyone have any experience of this, either for themselves or for a son/daughter?

Thanks

From insurance I have taken out in the past, they have asked length of period that. Have held a licence / from when I passed my test. I am not sure an early provisional will help too much in terms of lowering costs

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Go onto a price quotation site and see whether the question you're asked is "how long have you held a full licence" or "how long have you held a licence". Use that to deduce the answer to the question you asked.

The one I fell over when I got my car last year was lack of checkable history, I've had a motorbike license since 1972 and a car license since 1982 but hadn't owned a vehicle for over 30 years, I drove commercial vehicles a lot during that time but didn't have a vehicle of my own, this put my premium up.

I passed my bike test at the age of 19
I didnt get a car licence until I was 31
When i was how long I had held a licence for my car insurance it was always the length of time since I had passed my car test.

Beautiful bike! This is mine

Kies who is that with? as I tried to get insurance for my son and daughter today on a 1.2 S reg fiesta and the company who supposedly specialises in 17>24 year olds with black box fitted was going to cost £7600 and that price is not a typo

How can they specialise with them rates also had stipulations of time car could be used and keeping to speed limits with £100 fine for each time you broke an agreed limit

They told me that the cost of the car is not really relevant as it is the cost of the damage they can cause

I had s similar problem with company cars and not having an NCD in my own name. There's no obligation but your employer's insurance company should be able to provide a letter confirming your experience and claims, or lack of, history.

Yes this was discussed at the time, unfortunately one place is no longer there and there were problems at the other place which were a factor in my redundancy so it wasn't an option.
