I use nfu and there wasn't a price hike at all from quoting on a provisional to a full license. Not even an admin fee.

Kies who is that with? as I tried to get insurance for my son and daughter today on a 1.2 S reg fiesta and the company who supposedly specialises in 17>24 year olds with black box fitted was going to cost £7600 and that price is not a typo

How can they specialise with them rates also had stipulations of time car could be used and keeping to speed limits with £100 fine for each time you broke an agreed limit

They told me that the cost of the car is not really relevant as it is the cost of the damage they can cause

Having seen the way the young lad up the road from me drives his knackered Golf around I'd say that's a fair price.

For drivers under twenty the risk is SEVENTEEN TIMES higher between midnight and 3am, I think. Those Clios wrapped round telegraph poles "Tributes paid to birthday girl". When they ask how long you've had a license it usually means since you got the provisional, some insurers charge more if the license is upgraded because, as has been said, they're driving unsupervised. Adding an older driver will reduce it. Don't think about fronting, it could invalidate a claim, they'll load the premium anyway if they have suspicions (the vanity plate is the young driver's initials. People are stupid sometimes).

My daughter's insurance on a provisional in April was £686 and when she passed her test in June it went up by £144.
She is on my Admiral multi-car policy which now has 4 cars on it.

Admiral and Elephant used to be cheap. Elephant were good when my daughter started learing, about £850 fully comp for a Xantia no increase when she passed. When she had been driving 6months Elephant's renewal, £850 again, included a flyer for Admiral who quoted £350 per vehicle (Xantia and Berlingo) on a multicar policy with her able to drive either car. We took that and it ran fine for two years.

When The Lad started learning in 2011 he was restricted to Berlingo and premium for that also went up to £800. No big surcharge after he passed but at renewal they wanted £1500 and insisted on listing him as main user even though it's his mother's work car.

Liverpool Victoria came to rescue, around £700 for Berlingo with all four of us covered.
They're talking rubbish.

Remember as well that being insured as a second driver on someone else's policy to pay a reduced premium is also a big no no if you are in fact the main driver.
There was a way around it (loophole closed in 2010) Lots of underwriters offered policies with Drive Other Cars extension which was being used by scrotes insuring themselves on a 106, to drive performance cars. So most of them put their age limit up to 25.

This worked particularly with Post Office - whos DOC extension didn't require the other vehicle being driven to be insured. Made a lot of people angry when they closed the hole, I've always had cover  drive other cars quite often.

Quinn insurance. I asked a few guys on a BMW forum and they all found them reasonable. They will also freeze the insurance for a month or two when kids go off to uni and not driving.

Quinn insurance are no longer, they went into administration, but as the offered competitive quotes for young drivers it kept policies slightly in check, but now the big boys can quote what they want,

I tried again last night for a fiat punto 1.2 51 plate value £650 quote came back @23400
