Apart from the Laptops my PS3 seems to be the only music/video player I have.

There's a nice little Ap for the desire called GMote which lets you control your laptop from your Android phone.

Could I utilise the PS3's place on my home network to start streaming music ? I know it can do it to the PSP but it would be nice to be able to put the PS3 to a bit more use.

I'm not sure if this is what you want, but if your PS3 and PC are hooked up to the same network you can stream your music from your PC to your PS3. Certainly if you have Windows XP and Windows Media player 11 anyway;

Also had issues streaming to ... well, anything from a PC over a network. Lots of BIG delays. No harm in giving it a go, though - you can set up Windows Media Player to act as a server, and the PS3 can look for Windows Media Servers on your network pretty easily.

What PS3 do you have? Bear in mind the power consumption of some of the earlier ones is pretty crazy high - I think the first gen ones were 200W+, later ones 90W, new slimlines lower. A dedicated 'media player' device will probably only consume 7-15W.

I've got a qnap NAS on my (wired) network running Twonky as a upnp server and the PS3 works extremely well with this - quick scrolling through menus for both mp3s and photos. Playback sound quality is good as well.
