I was under the impression that I could pump my racing tyres up to 120 psi....but doing just that the other day I had a blowout:angry:...the side of the innertube was ripped to pieces. I have been told in good faith by my LBS that 120psi is ok but it is the max....should I lower my expectations...I pumped up the tubes today to 105psi with no problems...so I guess I should stick to this...anyone have similar problems?

What is the max psi stated on your tyres?

You likely had the tube trapped around the rim somewhere. Happened to me a couple of times, now I make sure I check it's fully seated very carefully. They will easily hold 120 psi if that's what you desire.

Yup, that would be my guess.
Easy done.

Even if the tyre says max psi 120, I reckon it wouldn't breach until you had put in waaaay over that pressure. The rim would probably go before the tyre?

Tyres can hold PSI easily when rated to do so - as above, the true maximum is normally higher than the 'rated' maximum. However, the issue is that the higher the PSI, the more any problems will be heightened - tube trapped normally means a blow out, weakened side walls would be the same.

You can easily put 200PSI+ into a tube so it was likely pinched. Try to be a bit more careful when you fit them and you'll be fine  It's easy done though.

thanks for that guys....you could be right the innertube must have been trapped...there was a hell of a rip along the tube wall...just have to be a little more careful on fitting

Seconded - If it's a spontaneous blowout, its a trapped tube.
Happened to me in a confined space. Another chaps roadbike tyre blew. I couldn't hear for the next 15 mins!
