This is a budget refurb. Had been left out in rain so was in a bit of a mess. Most of the rust cleaned off.

I can't beleive how much steel is on this bike.

The wheels were about the only alloy component. V brakes are even steel. Seatpost was steel, but had an alloy one knocking about.

So far, new cables and BB bearings + headset bearings.

Have a rear wheel in at LBS for trueing. Original had destroyed its hub and eaten through the axle.

Need a 6 speed cassette.

Tyres and tubes ordered.

Glad you've ordered some bits for it. It's not going far as it is.

My pub bike is a CX10, it used to be my only bike until recently, think of the steel as extra training.......

The refurb is part educational.

I'm learning to fix up bikes and bikes like this are a good learning tool.

It would have cost £25 to fix up plus a few bits I already had knocking about, but another £25 went on a new rear wheel and cassette.

Total was therefore £75 including the initial purchase price.

It's probably too good for a pub bike now as everything has been serviced and set up correctly, probably in better condition than when it left Halfords. I've even fitted mudguards and cheap lights that I had spare.

My brother is after a bike, he knows nothing about bikes so will sell to him probably.

This is my third rebuild.

First was a Claud Butler 1990s racer

Second was a 1990s raleigh MTB

I have spent the least amount of money on this one.

It helps me get an idea of what's good and what's not.

All old bikes need standard parts replacing due to wear. I've found Wilkinsons the cheapest, tyres for £6.50 each, cable inner and outer sets for £1.50 etc..

Only problem is that if you buy a decent fixer upper you feel inclined to buy more expensive parts so it ends up costing more.

The costs get ramped up when new wheels are involved, unfortunately I didn't know how bad the rear was on this until I stripped out the bearings, the original freewheel had seized on also.

To put it into perspective, a 3/32 chain for this cost £3.99, a new chain for my 10 sp road bike costs £30

This bike is functional and not that nickable, ok for shops and tatting around on.
