Make sure you ride out to Cap Formantor as shown in steveindenmarks photo, excellent ride, great scenery, would be handy to have lights for a road tunnel though.

Hi
Looking to see if some one has visited this region of Majorca for any cycling trips !

I have a 7 day trip booked with freinds for March 2014 ... Taking my own bike

Looking to hear anyone's experiences of cycling around this area !

Thanks
We go every year, usually rent a villa just outside Pollenca old town. Down side is my wife works at a school so its usually the hottest part of the year when we go but i just go out nice and early before it gets too hot. In my opinion Mallorca is a truly magical place to cycle and I guarantee you will want to do it again year after year, enjoy!

Fantastic place to cycle. I'm out on the 15th March for a week. 5th year in a row. Also thinking of a trip in September as well. Weather is usually pretty good in March but you might get the occasional rain shower.

Port de Pollenca to Cap de Formentor is good for a days ride, nice climbing and great scenery. After the first climb you reaching Coll de la Creueta. You will know when you are there because there is a large Stone pillar, car park and good view point.

When you leave there you have a good downhill ride for a few kms. As you level off there is a really nice cafe on the right hand side at sea level. Look for a sharp left hander, you need to peel right through the track into the trees. It is well worth a stop. It is called Cali Pi de Posada.

After coffee, you start climbing again and eventually go through a tunnel. It is only a couple of hundred metres but it is very dark in there and it is uphill.

When you reach Formentor lighthouse there is an excellent cafe in the old light keepers house. I am not sure if this closes during the off session, maybe one of the regular guys can say. It is a great place for lunch. They cook all manner of food in there.

Be aware that you are riding on a promontory. When I rode the wind was howling across it. This meant I was being blown uphill until I reached the next hairpin and then I was on the granny wheel, pedalling uphill like a man posessed, and sometimes almost at a standstill. It was hard work, great fun and I loved it.

There is a very good bike map you can get from Amazon UK and I suggest you buy one. It is tear proof and waterproof and has a lot of information relating to cycling on it. Including some of the climbing.

If you want to get further afield, it may be a good idea to ride to Sa Pobla, about 16km away and get on a train with your bike and train to a drop off point. I am thinking about riding in the mountains. There are lots of train stations between Sa Pobla and Palma and the train is very cheap.....and modern.

I was intending to ride Sa Calobra but realised it was both too far away for a day return trip on a bike. It is a ride I would really like to do.....well the down leg anyway.

Has anyone ridden from Alcudia to Cap de Pinar? I walked as far as the marina at Mal Pas but wondered what the ride to the lighthouse is like?

If there is anything else I can help with let me know.

All I can say is you will love it, take your own bike by all means but there are loads of hire places hiring great bikes, Anyone wanting info on hire, these would be my first port of call, www.2gocycling.com. family owned shop good bikes, www.pollensacycling.com again family owned son is ex pro and Majorcan national champion www.mallorcabikehire.com. 2 UK expats hiring Pinarello bikes, they deliver your bikes to your accommodation and a bit cheaper than the others. You will be spoiled for choice!

My wife and I have been for the last two years. Can't add a lot to the above posts but one of the things that I really appreciated was not feeling like a second rate cycling citizen. Cycling around that area it massively popular and most of the traffic is really considerate and patient. Arriving at the square at Petra and finding every cafe table occupied by cyclists and the whole square festooned with bike porn is an experience like no other. The roads are mostly superb but unfortunately in can lead to complacency and you do need to be aware that there are still some pot holed back roads. Enjoy.

Coming soon: Bonking on a hill near you!
I’m planning on going over in July to do a couple of days on a bike out there.

The good lady thinks it is sort of like a holiday for me with the Mrs, with cycling including, but really it's a Cycling holiday with the Mrs included…

Popping over in June again and can hire a decent sized car for a week(insurance included) cheaper than even the most basic of road bikes. Nuts.
