Puncture Resistant Hybrid Tyre

Hi Everyone

First time on here and asking for any suggestions for a punture proof hybrid tyre?
I mainly cycle on the road but I do use a few rough tracks and I'm sick of my tyres picking up the odd thorn on my travels so any advice on tyres that will help to repel them would be most welcome.

Hi and Sean.

You'll now get multiple different replies according to everyones preference so I'll pitch in first and suggest Schwalbe Marathon which I like for the type of riding you describe.

I've only recently picked up the first thorn in mine after 5 years and 7,000 miles since I first used them - not too bad I suppose. (Oh. and even then it stayed inflated until I got home and pulled the thorn out.)

But... no tyre is puncture proof. Marathon Plus' are the best you're going to get.

I've looked at the Marathon Plus myself but I think I just needed someone else to confirm it.

You'll get as many answers as there are tyre manufacturers but I'll put in a vote for Michelin City.

I personally found 28mm marathon plus slippery on my previous hybrid especially in damp, mucky conditions, never got a puncture though also very sluggish and draggy on roads but ymmv

Or the OP could save themselves some agro, and choose Armadillo Elite, Rubino Pro, or another tyre that doesn't require gorilla-like strength to install!

Or get the bike shop to fit, the rarity of punctures means they shouldn't need to come off for a very long time

I'm not really surprised. Part of the puncture resistance is probably a fairly thick layer of hard rubber. This will give high rolling resistance (sluggish), a relatively heavy tyre, and poorer grip (slippery) than a softer, thinner, lighter tyre. In my opinion there are far better tyres for those who want to keep punctures to a minimum. I think marathon plus is a tyre for round the world tourers on poor roads, often way out in the middle of nowhere, and days or even weeks from the nearest bike shop. Most UK riders probably don't really need that type of tyre, and it's a sledgehammer-nut approach.

The Marathon Original/Greenguard (like what I have got) fit easily. I don't even use tyre levers to get mine on and off (37-622 size on Mach1 rims for the record).

No complaints from me about grip either on this version.

Yep marathon plus for me 2700miles in 8 months around west coast and doing glasgow to inverness run no problems with them at all would buy again

Oh please, don't exaggerate.Only last week I fitted my first ever M+ and I was expecting to struggle with it because I don't have neither big hands nor strong hands but to my surprise it was a straight forward job.

There's a video on youtube and other places that shows the technique. Learn the technique and in a few minutes you can fit the tyre and without any levers.

I understand that there's no other tyre that is more puncture proof than the M+.

I've done just over 90 miles on them and I have no regrets. They are a little heavier than my gatorskin 28c at 585g and they are not more slippery in the wet than the gatorskin either.

I've got the 25c and that seems to do a very good job for a winter tyre. The last thing I want to do is spend time fixing a puncture in the cold / rain.

I wore out a pair of Armadillo Elites without a single puncture. Lots of small cuts in the tread, but no deflations. Total mileage probably around 7500. The Rubino Pros have been quite good too. Again, lots of small cuts, and similar mileage, but only one puncture.
