I too got sick of punctures, and couldn't take the risk of being late for work, so fitted Schwalbe Marathon Pluses two years ago, and haven't had a flat tyre since. I've pulled shards of glass out of the tread that would undoubtedly have defeated a standard tyre.
For me, any small trade off in weight and speed is more than compensated for by the peace of mind, knowing that I will get to my destination without a puncture.

– perhaps that's down to the fact that I decided to drop from my 700x28c Conti's to 700x25c Marathons? With the rainy conditions, I did notice they seemed a touch more skittish on white lines and over manhole covers, but I put that down to the rubber being brand new and the roads extra greasy.
