It is unpleasant and startling behaviour and similar (but less threatening) things have happened to me and my cycling kids just beyond a one-way section that many locals think starts a hundred or so yards earlier.
We walk a few yards of one-way on the pavement (to save a long slog after training) and re-mount where it goes 2-way again. So, so many people clearly think the one-way section is longer despite clear signs.
Top marks for not swinging out a foot. It feels good at the time but is not the smart answer in the long run, particularly as anyone driving for 42 years will be elderly-ish.
