Qualifications

Evening all:okay:

I`m finally doing it, I either go off work with stress or jack it in and leave, then start again. The latter would be preferable..................

I`ve always been hands on, and very technical in my way of thinking. I`ve been in medical electronics for nearly 20 years now, and in all honesty am burnt out with it, I`ve done it to death and am bored sh*tless with it nowadays. I have a HND in electronic/comms engineering, as a background.

I`m now thinking of new starts, maybe electrics, a BT engineer, or even a gas fitter as I work now with gases/pressures/leak testing etc and am familiar with a lot of the practices.

Looking around though, these jobs all need very specific qualifications which are close to mine, but not the same. Do I apply and see what happens? Or do I need to think about going back to college (I thought those days were long gone) and go from there?

Not sure what to do, anybody done anything similar? I can`t stay in my current job, I`ve had it to the back teeth......................xx(

The question is what do you want to do?

I always wanted to be a design engineer, I did O and A levels to that end, did a degree to that end, got a job being a design engineer, got good at it, became a project manager and stopped being a design engineer. I rapidly got to hate spreadsheets and running pointless meetings. Fortunately for me Osama Bin Laden saw to the World trade Centre and I lost my job. Instead of finding another big buck, tedious, spreadsheet pushing job I decided to step back to doing what I always wanted, getting my hands dirty, making things, inventing things. Now I'm doing things that nobody in the World has done before, I get to play every day. I'm knackered when I get home from work, but I'm doing the stuff that excited the 13 year old me.

What did the 13 year old you want to do? Other than Astronaut or porn star which possibly aren't going to happen, feel free to reset your course.

I like your post! To be honest, I can`t remember what I wanted to do at 13, when I was 5 though I was going to be a fireman:eek: These days not on your nellie!! I`d love to do something hands on as that`s what I`m good at, but also something that has job satisfaction, because right now my job scores a big fat NIL on that front..............

I haven`t to be fair, needs a certain type of person which I`m not sure I am!!
Not sure that's entirely true, although I may have had the same reservations before getting in to it myself, only to discover, I'm entirely the right kind of person now. Back in the day, I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes, but things move on. Just a thought.

What subject did you take up with the teaching?

Trade based in a construction college. I've only ever been really good at one thing and it was my trade, but like you, I had done it to death. I got out but stayed within the realms of my knowledge and expertise , which was a good choice for me and invaluable in the job.

Ah ok I`m getting your point:okay:

It`s funny, new applicants need a degree in biomedical engineering (medical electronics) to do my job nowadays, maybe I could follow the same route as you, certainly seems possible

Unfortunately, reality dictates that you have to decide what income you need to live the lifestyle that you have to maintain. I have no children, and the mortgage is but a memory, so downgrading was not too difficult. If you have a family and have to pay for your roof then the most satisfying jobs are not always the ones that put the most money in the bank, it's a horrible trap, and a difficult decision.

I agree. I live as my own boss (love it that way and the freedom that comes with it), but am paying £1000 in bills/mortgage every month before any money is mine. My job is well paid, but it`s sh*t, and I`ve got to the point where I`d rather be happy and skint, than doing a job I hate.

Obviously I need to earn enough to keep my house, that goes without saying!!
