Question about Income Tax

Can anyone help me with a question about income tax?

I submitted my tax return in late Jan as an employed person. (was self employed 5 years ago)

I have my salary and a military pension.

Prior to my submission my tax code for my main income (salary) was BR and my pension was 603L

I have just received an advice notice from the HMRC that my tax code on my pension is now BR.

Has the personal tax allowance gone, if it has my tax bill has just gone up by the price of a very, very decent road bike or should I be chatting to the HMRC?

You should be chatting to HMRC. They sent out 100,000 tax codes in error this year. I'm on JSA and got sent a letter saying they would like to tax my benefits at 20%. It's worth checking as unfortunately they haven't had a good year.

It is all to do with a new system they are using. It is sending out thousands of wrong tax codes to people who have changed jobs, or have a second job, or who's circumstances have changed recently.

I had to phone them up about tax codes too. Wasn't much of a hassle, just a bit annoying...especially as my main tax code was still for a job I left over a year ago!

So does that mean that if your circs have changed in no way whatsoever for the past, say, three years that no change should have been made?

Supposidly, but there are cases where things are going wrong. My Daughter changed jobs 18 months ago and she has had a new code for basic rate tax. Anyone who has received a BR code should get onto their tax office.

I had a letter from them last Tuesday confirming the tax code which they would use for my Job Seekers Allowance.

This was a coincidence because, although it related to a claim which had finished in March 2009, it arrived the day before I had an interview at the Job Centre about a new claim for JSA.
