People, this is getting boring.

If you want to ride regularly on the road in ice/snow then buy either Nokian Hakapallita or Shwalbe Marathon Winter. Come in various sizes.

If you want to DH on the piste at the end of the season, or ride off-road in the woods buy chunky MTB tyres with or without studs.

Sorry macB, i've no experience of IRC blizzard but they have not had a good review for many a year, nor are they available in scandanavia.

just add 4 or 5 (or enough to just nearly meet the ends) links of small link garden chain at 90 degrees to tread, secure tightly with 2 big cable ties threaded thru the ends of the chains. maybe 5 or 6 per wheel. only any good with disc brakes tho. unless you just do 1 wheel and run 1 rim brake. cheap n cheerful.

ps,

was just a thought, never tried it or seen it. if you try, let us know if it works.

Brompton Greens, judicious use of my feet, and slow speed.

I've done my commute both Monday morning and this morning.

I'm on Marathon Plus tyres; luckily my route is flat as a pancake and relatively OK ice/snow wise - had snow on the ground since Saturday night now. No issues yet, but I did get off and walk for a bit twice on Monday morning. (I was worried about being squashed under a bus).

I discovered Sunday morning that cycling on (fresh) snow is OK but clogs up the mudguards something awful; on Monday that riding in bus lanes is fraught with peril as the busses create little frozen bumps of ice all over the lane. Today was better. Riding where the cars ride is best as the snow is either mushy or completely gone; although I'd be very careful of riding on roads I didn't know very well (I know all the potholes/bumps/grates on my trip in) and also of riding on uneven surfaces.

I'd also have thought twice about cycling if I was stuck on a non-folding bike. Knowing my public transport set up is quite good helps in my case - if it gets too bad I can get off and catch a bus.

I also cycle much slower than some people on here at the best of times

Sorry, macB

Saw your post after someone had mentioned the Blizzards. I really should learn to read properly shouldnt i?

I ride on Marathon Winter. I think you'll be pleased with the purchase. I'm leaving for england soon so i'll get to see what all the fuss has been about.

Happy icemas!

Just picked up my Marathon Winters. They are fitted to my Giant hybrid and that will now be my winter commuting bike. The temperature has risen here now and all is turning to rain and slush! Typical

I've been cycling through it. Taking it steady, stay vertical on the corners and fine even on sheet ice. Tyres are some slim(ish) semi-slick dunlops on 26" rims pumped hard. No trouble so far.

I've just been looking at some of the posts on here regarding the costs some of you pay for bikes !!! God !!!
Money to burn........LOL.
Or am i just a cheap skate?? Or jealous??
My cheapo Trek 7.1 is nearly 3 years old now. And at £260 it's a cracking bike.

It may sound a lot at first glance, but when you consider how much people typically spend on their cars then it is not really that much at all.

Thankfully the thaw has set in now. Cycled to work this morning, lowered the tyre pressure to try and give more grip, was raining on the way home which removed nearly all of the lingering ice off the roads.
