Every 'old' 1st/2nd class stamp price rise has been below survival rate and no where near 39%.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Although, as I posted a while ago, postage is cheap in affordability terms compared with the days of the penny black.

Do not forget other postal costs are going up as well. I send out a lot of packages that weighs in at 75gm this is going to rise from £1.58 to £2.70.

We send out Planning and Building Regs packages which cost a lot but still better valiue than using carriers.... if we don't use the Post Office we risk losing it... but then I'm advocating buying stamps now to save money using the PO which is hypocritical! A paradox!

I'm a fairly regular Ebayer, posting a small number of mostly low value items a week. For someone like me are there any realistic alternatives to using Royal Mail?

I like RM - I find them reliable and I live about 1/4 mile from my local PO so it's easy to get to, but I wonder if these increases may make it unrealistic to post low value items as, in effect, it will mean a large percentage increase on the price of an item.

I'm wondering if the next day delivery guarantee will ever end.

It appears in Spain 7 day delivery is the norm whilst for the USA it is 4 day minimum.
Here 1 day delivery supposedly has a near 98% rate.

In case anybody hasn't noticed, because of the disparate rates of increase, postage cost after the end of the month could actually fall, if you have these current 1st or 2nd class stamps.

For example, 1st class large letters between 251g and 500g currently cost 146p, but 160p from May. So in May it can be posted for 2 current 2nd class stamps plus 1 current 1st class stamp, which currently cost 118p, a fall of 19% from today's price.

The reason price can actually fall using such stamps is because they will have appreciated far more in percentage terms than most other tariffs. It seems RM wanted to slap the biggest increases on the cheapest, most common services. The services school children and pensioners, orphans and widows use most. Great.

Health Warning: Am pointing subject out purely for amusement, no recommendation to sell your house raising money to buy stamps is either suggested or implied...

for the record stamps marked 1st, 2nd etc will be treated the same as per there class, part of the reason for price rise is the threat the universal postal service due to the regulators burn and slash approach to giving the big private delivery firms free reign to decimate our current offerings. Funnily enough the same approach cannot be taken in in their own postal markets but I`m digressing  IMO the service provided here for the money is superb however decreasing mail bag size and increasing delivery addresses mean costs are higher simples!

Just been to post one of my normal £1.58 packages, this time instead of UK it was air mail to France, total price £1.49. 9p cheaper what is that about?

Let them all buy and change the rules.
It depends if the cash windfall for the PO is useful in itself.

This is all the stupid regulators doing. They accelerated the losses with their stupidity in the face of reality.
