With my usual strength and ignorance I have manged to break the spring on the quick release on my front wheel. Is it dangerous to travel on the bike even though I have tightened the nuts as much as possible?

The spring is only there to make the quick release... erm, release quickly.
It's a very weedy spring, completely flattened by the tension when you do the QR up. You won't miss it.
