I have fitted one to my commuter bike to aid chain cleaning.Thinking of fitting one to the roadbike as well, is this a wise thing to do?

They come in different versions for different chain widths.
If you have a 10-speed chain you need a 10-speed link, and if you have a 9-speed chain you need a 9-speed link.
8-speed links are also OK for 7-speed chains.

This type, as used with hub gears, are a no no.

KMC also do specific ones for Campag 10 speed chains only.

I use them on all my bikes and they have been totally reliable.

Some people have trouble splitting the links. Dirt can make it harder to do, so clean them first. I find a squeeze-and-slide motion works best, preferably with no tension on the chain.

KMC make a special pair of pliers to split the links really easily.

Only a tenner and well worth it.

If you use a Wipperman Connex quick link, make sure you get it the right way round or it will 'tick' on the smallest cog. When you look at the connecting link from the side on the top run of the chain, the slot in the connecting link should be v- shaped not ^ shaped.
