It reads quite well, and certainly represents how I have felt. I fell into the 2-3 months bracket.

Mgarl,
It is not pleasant in the winter, especially those dark quiet lanes. My daily route is 18 miles each way and I still have not worked out which bit scares me most, the hectic town centre bit or the quiet country thin road. I certainly commute less in the winter, but I do try to stick at it. Still managed all five days last two weeks, this week work and other commitments prevent it, but next week I should be back to it again. Just need some better lights to compliment the ones I have at present.

I am feeling a little better after reading the return to bike stories. I have been off mine nearly 4 weeks after face planting at the end of a sportive, my own fault, I took a cobbled speed hump at the wrong angle, bashed up my face and knees (healed) and cracked/bruised ribs on right side. Normally I commute 4 days a week 10 miles a day round trip and a longer ride at the weekend, since April last year. Such a battle to build up some fitness and then it all goes in a week or two! I had two spells last winter off my bike with flu, both times I was off work for nearly 2 weeks and off my bike for a month. I just seem to be a bit doomed! Was so pleased to have done a 100km sportive for the first time too! What is it about the Bristol/North Somerset area?! Still find lying down and turning over hard and on very light duties at work, can't really lift anything still and on painkillers.. I am quite nervous about getting back on this time.

Best advice I had was just get the miles under your belt first, dont worry about anything, just do the miles, the rest will follow.
Mine was a collar bone too, not broken, but clavicle has moved, all because someone turned right without looking or indicating. Frustrating more than anything.

Read the bio of Eddie Merckx by Fotheringham, that'll get you pedalling hard!

I had an accident in july and when I was in hospital the first time my resting heart rate was normally about 45bpm. When I was readmitted 5 weeks later it was already up to 60bpm. I was surprised how quickly it had risen in such a small amount of time. I hate to think what it is now let alone what it will be when I eventually get back on the bike which I am hoping will be December.

Will look it up.

Cranky Knee Girl,
The second day back on the bike I saw two really bad accidents involving cyclists and that made it difficult to get on the bike the following day, but I did and I am glad I have. Would feel really bad if it put me off. I have changed my route a bit at the moment, more cycle lanes and avoid certain roads. It has added an extra mile or so to my journey, but I am still doing it. My right shoulder still healing properly, cant lie on my right side at night for long and a few restrictions, when lifting etc, but its getting there.

Martin,
July to December, thats a long time, just in time for the really cold weather come  Good luck hope you are healing well?

I am going to go out for a gentle try out outing this weekend, a mile or two only....I am lucky as my route to work could not be any better, mainly on off-road Route 33. I'm the biggest danger to me!

Just returning after 12 weeks off the bike with a broken arm. I did do a bit of turbo work and spinning in the last few weeks before I came back, but it is noticably harder work riding now than it was before. Coming back slowly, but just a little worried how well I'll cope with a 100km audax on Sunday.

Well I survived it and got round. On the flat I seem to be reasonably similar to before, but hills were hard.
