Quotes - how far can the final price differ?

Just wondering what the legal situation in the UK is. In Germany for example, if you get a quote for some work to be carried out, the final bill is not allowed to be more than a maximum of 15-20% higher than the quote. Does the same apply in the UK?

IIRC a *quote* is binding, but an *estimate* is not.

Are there terms and conditions? - they often have a disclaimer re. price.

The thing not to do is make changes from the spec of what's been quoted for - that can be a carte blanche that will put extras onto the final price.
