Always used to see him outside Coral bookies in Guiseley smoking a cigarette in between races. So sad to see a legend and nobody seemed to know who he was.

If he'd worn a helmet he'd have been a better batter.

wouldn't he have been more prone to rotational injuries? And risk compensation - he took more than enough risks as it was.

Close was quoted as saying "A cricket ball can't hurt you, it's only on you for a second". I recall an incident where he'd been fielding stupidly close and was hit, so in response, he moved closer still

A legend indeed. I got his autograph in the early 70s when Somerset played Essex in a JPL game, IIRC.

He played professional football for Arsenal, Leeds Utd and Bradford City, and he was also an excellent golfer with a handicap in single figures, playing either right handed or left.

RIP
