Why is he flawed? Listening to his musical history I can see no flaws. Legend that I got into too late really.

No flaws in his musical talent.

I was referring more to his periods of drug dependency, clinically diagnosed schizoid perwonality, abberant behaviour, all the rest. Not holding any of that against him as arguably that's a result of the way he was treated as a child by his Dad, but it's difficult to argue they aren't flaws.

Sgt Pepper was a response to Pet sounds apparently!!

Which was itself well known as Wilson's riposte to the Beatles' Rubber Soul.

All the good ones seem to die not long after I get into their music. Bowie, Prince, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys of which he was one (I think they all require credit even though BW was kind of the main creative there).

The exception was the Rolling Stones. By rights they should have started croaking in the early 90s if the above had applied to them!!

However I do think that any band who influenced the Beatles has to be considered one of the greats!! Sgt Pepper was a response to Pet sounds apparently!! That piece of news I heard today was mind blown. If you influence what is considered one of the greatest and most influential bands then that makes you a great too.

Pet Sounds was made in response to The Beatles album Rubber Soul so both bands influenced each other.

McCartney rates God Only Knows as one of the greatest songs ever made.

So as a tribute to him. What was the best song he had a hand in / wrote? What is the best underrated / underplayed song of theirs? That is in your opinion only.

I think it is good to recall what he caused to exist in our musical history and appreciate him through his output.

He's done some great stuff, and even stuff he didn't write such as Sloop John B he did a fantastic arrangement for.

God Only Knows is an obvious choice, a wonderful song, but as a musician myself I like Darlin' very much too as a very well written, excellently performed (imstruments all by the Wrecking Crew and not the Beach Boys as oft credited, other than Wilson's piano and some tamborines) and very tidily produced.
