Sad to hear. He was a great character actor who always turned in a good performance and imbued his roles with presence and gravitas.
Couple of favourites of mine was his role as the monk in Fifth Element, and also another excellent turn as Fluellen in the Brannagh version of Henry V "If the enemy is an ass, and a fool, and a prating coxcomb, is it meet, think you, that we should also [be] ... a prating coxcomb?'
He's been in loads and loads of films and plays and always excellent

I never managed to watch Alien all the way through. Once I stopped when Ian Holm started squirting hydraulic fluid from his broken chest cavity.
I found Ian Holm's android character to be even more disturbing than the great Alien himself.
