The discussion is about a sadly deceased practitioner of politics, not politics itself.

We've all been good boys and girls and stayed well away from the P word, havent even mentioned the flavour of P that he preferred.

You started a thread about a politician.

How is that not political?

Gone to the class war in the sky. RIP.

BTW I was always conflicted with Prescott. I found him the sort of personality I could like but his class war politics (ever watch his TV documentary after he stopped being an MP) I found a bit weak in that documentary. He had to voice over saying the opposite of what the poor working class people had just said to agree with his class war politics.

Also, I liked the guy in interviews but found his pugilist activities completely over the top and unnecessary. I always wondered how they could take action against the egg thrower and not against him. I guess the police and CPS didn't prosecute front line politicians back then.

Perhaps in the same way that backseat moderation is forbidden but you're still going merrily at it.

The discussion is about the man, not his political activities. If you cant tell the difference then I cant help you.

Everyone has stayed out of the realms of political discussion and been polite, respectful and well behaved on this thread. As the thread starter I would ask you to find it within yourself to do the same

The issue there was clear cut. He'd been assaulted once and had a reasonably held belief that he was bleeding (it was runny egg, but in the heat or the moment he didn't know that) and that he was about to apprehend unlawful violence a second time.

He has the right in law to defence himself and using his empty hands to do so is not unreasonable. Had he whipped out a machete and cut the guy up then that would have been unreasonable force, but he didn't - Prescott was unarmed and roughly twice the age of his assailant, there is no question whatsoever that he used unlawful or unreasonable force in defending himself.

And he didn't progress a confrontation for an unreasonable length of time, and thus turn legitimate self defence into affray.

He simply didn't break the law, and with the incident caught close up from several different angles and witnessed by several policemen and other credible witnesses of good character there was no question of there needing much of an investigation to establish that basic fact.

Really it's egg thrower that got off lightly. Using or threatening unlawful force in pursuit of a political objective puts him in the hands of terrorism legislation, and it was only Prescott's own intervention that had it dealt with as an assault.

That's what started the argument, but what earned Oisin whatisname a punch was a disparaging remark about Clasrkson's wife having just recently left him. Strangely very few news outlets reported that bit, preferring to stick to the hot meal narrative.

I recall Prescott's Top Gear appearance. He stood up for his beliefs, but ultimately took everuthing in good humour.

His appearance on TG is a favourite of mine, the guests are always better when they are interesting rather than being there because something do is popular (James Blunt is excellent for that reason despite me not liking his music).

JP certainly showed why he was a popular politician, and could work a crowd, I might watch both those episodes again later as they are fun.

It was Prescott's funeral on Friday. I don't know why it took so long to come around, but hey ho.

Well attended and many good things said of the man, a measure of the respect people across all walks of life had for the chap.

I suspect the 10 week delay in getting the funeral organised was in part to ensure they could get 2 ex PMs and the current PM to attend.

There can’t be many people who can get such an impressive turnout to a funeral.
