My wife had the pleasure of meeting her and Timothy (I probably made the same comment when he died). She was escorting them on some charity presentation. Whether this was Oxfam, blind charity or millenium volunteers, I will have to check with her.

Conclusion: Very much luvvies, but wonderful people - really friendly and researching hard to ensure they were both up to speed and fully informed ready for the event, not just turning up and smiling. Both were really keen on understanding the event and the purpose of the charity. Came away a big fan and impressed.

I remember the canal series. In one of the episodes she got confused with something and then quite upset with herself. Her husband then explained it was the early stages of dementia.

I remember that happening, so sad.

Yes, I did.

Sorry for repeating myself.

She was excellent on radio as well, adapted with the times, brilliant actress and did so much more than Fawlty Towers. Also probably the best of relationships with Timothy West they loved each other to their bones. The canal shows where she was clearly confused, he just picked up the pieces and steered her through it.

I didn't know her as an actor, but the canal series were an inspirational example of living with dementia.

she was brilliant in Fawlty Towers, iirc her son plays Siegfried Farnon in All Creatures Great & Small

Yes, he does, in the present incarnation of it
My daughters chap always reminds me of Samuel West, as Siegried

Especially when in a tweed jacket!
