Rabbits

Ever been woken up by a rabbit licking your face and chewing your hair? One little Herbert nicked my yorkshire pudd'n off the dinner plate. They're easy to house train and each one has its own character. We'd never consider imprisoning a rabbit in a hutch, not fair on bunny and the owner misses all the fun.

ours does, but its a giant rabbit so one a bit more of an even footing, the cat is pissed though.

Also, get a giant one, they're hysterical every now and again she stands up and there are ears over the table, also cleans kitchen floor (which makes me feel bad about wanting to cook rabbit pie as it would likely lead to cannibalism).

Downside is ours is slow to housetrain and does normal poos billions of them

When I grew up we used to eat them .... my father used to breed rabbits for that purpose .... to this day I can't see the point of keeping one as a pet.

In the evenings he normally ends up slumping half on the arm of the sofa and half on my wifes shoulder, watching tv with us. I'm not convinced he watches

Our first guinea pig (an Abysinnian, all rosettes of fur) was inside one evening. We'd had a paper bag of grapes, and the bag was on the floor, and she went into it and turned round so that her nose stuck out, and watched telly!

The programme on was 'The Flight of the Condor', and we always wondered if she thought the bag was protecting her from condors.

make the floor of the hutch out of two kinds of mesh - a strong rustproof (stainless is good if you can find it) 50mm mesh with a lightweight galvanised mesh over the top of it. Provided you keep the bedding topped up you won't have to clean it half or even quarter as often. The droppings and urine drop through the mesh on to the ground, where they can be scooped up with a shovel and put on the compost.

It also keeps the bedding a lot dryer (because it's ventilated) and you don't get the bottom of the hutch rotting out.

Rabbits like both seclusion and moving around, so a hutch that is about six feet by two feet by two feet high is good - angle the roof to take the water off the back. Make a seperate sleeping compartment with it's own door, so that you can reach in and get the little critter out if she or he decides to go shy on you.

And (this may have been said already) check their ears for soreness regularly, and be prepared to do a bit of barbering around the back end if the rabbit is long haired.
