I think the whole thing harks back to the days of being "stranded" and breaking down a lot. I really don't think it happens.

We have two cars in our family and neither have broken down in 10 years while on the road. I had a puncture 5 years ago and changed the wheel myself (far quicker than waiting for a man to do it) and I did have a flat battery when on holiday and parked up for a week. It took five minutes to locate a nearby garage, him ten minutes to arrive and jump start the car all for £20.
So those two things were sorted out quicker than the AA would. Also I have saved at least £1,000

I'd describe it more like catastrophe cover these days. I've used them a few times. One one occasion my effin car went into safe mode because the battery was almost flat and it didn't like me trying to start it multiple times. Stuck half in and half out of a car park.

Thinking about this -
Cars are just so much better now. I guess the break down about a tenth of what they used to.
If you do break down, you only need a decent phone and you can find a local garage. There probably is an app for it. Communication is so much better and there are more ways to get you sorted out easier.
On the minus side, less things on a car can be repaired at the roadside. Fewer drivers know or are able to carry out these repairs.

So overall perhaps it is down to or willingness to sort out the occasional problem or pay rather too much for someone else to do it.
