I don't expect many of you good peeps to have heard of Rachid Taha. (I may be wrong.)
Though you may know the song Barra Barra from the movie Black Hawk Down.
He was a huge exponent of Algerian Rai, (one of my favourite styles of music) and helped push it to to be extremely popular worldwide, mixing Algerian, Arabic and French with Rock music. He had a European hit with a cover of The Clash's 'Rock The Casbah', on the way opening doors for acts such as Cheb Khaled and other African/Arabic musicians such as the hugely popular Tinariwen.
His album's are well worth listening too and his gig's were usually one great big party event.
