Following on from the advert / jingle thread, I was interested to look up some history of this station. A radical lifeline for the youth of yesteryear, this website epitomises the mood. Look at the chart lists of yesteryear! All the titles can be listened to - O the good ole days have returned...terrorists begone, politicians away! celebrities - who?

Would that be Radio Luxembourg 208 MW perchance. As listened to by adolescent kids under the blankets on solid state transistor radios from ITT, Grundig and Sony, in mono with a single white hard plastic earplug? Emperor Roscoe, yes? Jumpers for goal-posts eh?

I went to one of their roadshows at Cornwall Cliseum many moons ago.

Remember when radio dials had Hilversum on them? Where the hell was Hilversum anyway...

Hilversum was, and still is, in The Netherlands. As a youngster I sent them a reception report and got a post card back from one of the staff who had visited my home town whilst serving in the Dutch navy and had been rather attracted to one of the young ladies in my local paper shop. It felt great as a young lad to get a response from a foreign country and I felt I had to visit Hilversum one day, and I did, on my bike! Also managed to include Kalundborg, Oslo and Motala in cycle tours.

Mmm. I feel compelled to root around in the loft looking for the old radio now. I think I even have the old earpiece in a drawer - it doubled up for use on the B&W portable telly.

I remember listening to Luxembourg in my youth. They used to have a phone in competition where listeners had to 'guess the occupation' written on a card. I tried really really hard one night and managed to 'tune in' to the presenter, so when he asked the occupation I concentrated and "airline pilot" came into my head - but none of the callers got it. After an hour of the competition he announced the occupation as 'airline pilot' and I woke my entire family when I shouted "Airline Pilot! I knew that. I am gifted!"

It was 2am on a school day and I had a paper round...

I've never been the same since.
