They used to have a phone in competition where listeners had to 'guess the occupation' written on a card.

Does anybody remember hearing late at night, a sort of fanfare, which was repeated for ages until some awful piece of martial music would be played? I sometimes left my bedside radio on for hours late at night in the hope of hearing a clue as to what it meant. Then a couple of years ago I heard a radio programme about thse strange broadcasts - turns out nobody knew what the hell they were or where they came from. Most people thought they were something to do with the Soviet Union.

Would that be Radio Luxembourg 208 MW perchance. As listened to by adolescent kids under the blankets on solid state transistor radios from ITT, Grundig and Sony, in mono with a single white hard plastic earplug? Emperor Roscoe, yes? Jumpers for goal-posts eh?
I went to one of their roadshows at Cornwall Cliseum many moons ago.

Remember when radio dials had Hilversum on them? Where the hell was Hilversum anyway...

I'm there right now, in that bed with you (metaphoricaly)speaking of course. Ah, back in the day, surely a time of innocence.

In which case, you must be talking metres rather than KHz that is normally used on radio dials in more recent times.

Twas on Luxemburg that I heard that the king was dead. That night they cancelled all adverts as a mark of respect. Funny that for some events you will always remember exactly where you were when you heard it Also Alice Cooper's Welcome to my Nightmare.
