I think it's more guidelines than instructions. Staff are advised to send people with any bulky items to the Wide Aisled Gate (WAG)
They manage the gateline and really I can't see it being a big problem going through the WAG with your Brompton, I do everyday. I take it you push the bike through ahead of yourself? If it is causing you a problem to such an extend you need to start a thread on it, my advice would to be leave two minutes earlier, then everyone's happy.

Not quite. I push it alongside me and can easily go through any barrier. The problem I had was that an overzealous staff member practically jumped in front of the barrier, preventing me from getting out even though I had passed the actual moving parts. He then insisted I go back, through the barrier he said I shouldn't have used, to then go through the wide barrier.

It's not a time issue, I always give myself plenty of time to get to the platform. It's more to do with the sheer volume of bikes queueing for the wide barrier can stop others getting through to the normal barriers. Cambridge station ticket hall is terrible and is shortly due for a complete overhaul. Maybe when it's done the whole process will be a lot smoother.

Just go through the wider barrier and enjoy your day. Arguing with staff and demanding to see written evidence of rules does nothing but cause wear and tear on the soul, even more so when they actually go get the book and show you the rule...

It's the rules that I'd like to see, which is what I asked about in the original post. You're not wrong on the wear and tear thing though. :okay:

Thanks for your replies everyone. Have a great day all.

First Transpennine have the same rule. Staff operated barrier to be used for all bikes. Question is which do you use when the staff operated barrier isn't the wide one.
First Great Western are showing as the operators of Cambridge station.

As long as your bike doesn't get caught in the barriers there shouldn't be an issue.Generally I see people getting their luggage caught in the small barriers all the time.
