    I believe similar devices mounted with machine guns were used in the far east (Malaysia?) during one of the world wars.

    Promptly followed by:
    "Can I have a go on your train bike thing, please? I'll be your best friend."

    Do a Google search on Velorail - not disimilar. There's a lot in France on disused rail lines, and they make for a fun few hours.
