Whilst doing sport or just lobbing out a grolly in the street?

I've seen lots of schoolkids spurting a small amount of spittle out in a projectile manner which is pretty gross.

See loads of it. Chap crossing road yesterday, big gob on pavement as he started to cross.

It's not new unfortunately. It seemed to start about 10 years ago when I was in school at about the time footballers seemed to start doing it. There is a chap I often see on my commute who I overtake as soon as I can as he seems to do it every 50yards.

It's gross.

Been going on for ages, but I've never understood it--how is it only youngish males appear to suffer from such an overabundance of mouth saliva coupled with a defective or absent swallowing reflex?

I think it's a cultural thing for some people; I work in Birmingham city centre and I see hundreds of young people spitting, but also frequently see little old Asian ladies, looking very respectable, suddenly spit onto the pavement and walk off! I am always a little bit grossed out by people spitting, who aren't running or doing sports or something... Yuck.

it is foul...and its just another thing I have to step around while walking through London.

I remember it starting up when I was in year 10 at school...so what 1997-1998ish. I did ask a few kids why they did it and most didnt really have an answer. one kid said its because it tastes nasty...not sure what he was doing/suffering from to have such foul tasting saliva that he had to spit it out on the floor instead of swallowing it.

I've done it a few times when I've had a blocked nose. When out on the bike, I spit in the road, when walking then it's usually to the side in some bushes. Never on the pavement where people are directly walking as it is not very nice.

I must admit, I'm a spitter. But only when I'm on the bike and I have a cold. It has to go somewhere! But I always 1. check that no one is following me without me noticing, and 2. there is no one else about. Spitting in the street for no other reason but to spit is, I agree, disgusting!

I do it while on a long cycle or run (i.e. while doing sporty things). I don't otherwise. There is a cultural element to it also. Many many years ago I worked in the NHS in various guises, and I can remember posters saying "Do Not Spit" in about 15 different languages (there were a lot of nationalities and cultural backgrounds represented amongst the staff).
Sport-wise, it's perhaps more of a bloke thing (???) I dunno... ladies... do you spit or swallow?

I recall spitoons in the local pub when I was a kid, nothing new but yes, disgusting. I have to admit that I thought it was exclusive to Merseyside, I don't remember seeing it much pre 1990 when I worked in London.

It's footballers, they spit to show they are virile and athletic in the same way their managers chew gum to show they are the alpha male.
