When I was a kid I was really jealous of a mate at school who had a round metal toasting thing on the end of a metal handle. You opened it up, wedged thickly buttered bread on each side, and then dropped an egg in it, closed it, and held it over the gas flame until the bread was crispy and the egg soft cooked. I've never seen anything quite like it ever since, but it did make wonderful toasted egg sarnies. His family was from Georgia originally, perhaps it came from there.

We had a Breville thing that would do an OK job with cheese and onion, but was frankly rubbish at eggs and baked beans as it was too shallow and the egg would usually all run out.
My mum did Tasty Toasties with one of those. We even took it on picnics and used it over a methylated spirit camping stove :notworthy:

Not to everyone's tase but I used to get a full house in a scuffler (massive bread bun) with grated cheese as an extra filling.

By the time it got to work from the shop the cheese had melted, combined with the freshly bitten runny egg it was heavenly .

This was a knife and fork job but well worth the effort.
