IMO, if you want a small car, just buy a Toyota Yaris.
I never thought I'd hear myself say that, as I used to view Japanese cars as bland and boring for people who didn't know any better.
After three years of ownership of a rather elderly Yaris, bought because I didn't have much spare cash at the time and I wanted a 1L to save money on tax and insurance, it has been remarkably reliable, and done everything it is supposed to go without complaint. You really do just put petrol in it and drive with a service now and again. I said I'd buy something better when I could, but have no intention of changing it now.
It's also all-round competent in it's dynamics, very practical interior design and very spacious for a small car, very well thought out and engineered with some neat features. A smooth variable valve timing engine when Ford still supplied the Ka with a 1950s OHV rattle box.
If I was to make complaints, there is a bit of an Italian short legs, long arms thing going on with the driving position (mine is a very early Phase II without the reach adjustment on the steering which came later. I assume it would fix this) and there's quite a bit of road noise on some surfaces, but there again, it is the bargain model. More upmarket ones probably had better insulation.

My Skoda Fabia managed to be bland, boring and a bottomless money pit.

My Mum thought much the same about her Fabia. The ageing used Daihatsu she replaced it with was a delight in comparison.
I just don't get people's love of VAG products. The MKI and MKII Golf were peak VW IMO.
I have an uncle obsessed with Audis, but there always seems to be something wrong with it and usually costs a lot of money to fix.
