7 nights B&B. Coach transfer to and from the hotel. 22kg baggage allowance, meaning I could take many outfits! OK, it's in late November when it'll be about 20 Celsius, but it's just after my 65th birthday when I become an OAP, albeit not officially as I don't officially get my pension till I'm 66 and 3 months, but you know what I mean.

Bring eaten by Killer whales doesn't tempt.

Maybe a 5* eco alternative to Zurich?

There is normally a "single supplement"

I used to do that most years - you have to check if the single rooms are the carp ones at the back that are also about half the size

but some just give you a double room for the extra - especially out of season

but a 2* is a bit of a red flag normally

and wouldn;t be inhabited by people with your sense of style

also - if you look on FLightRadar24 you can often see planes being turned back from that airport due to frequent problems

apparently the island is amazing though!

Ask them!

I would guess 1.5 to 2 * £425. They might give you a discount for only one flight, transfer and set of meals, but you still need a room.

I did it on the Costa Blanca once. I booked my own flight but had to pay the same price at the hotel as if I had someone with me.

I'm going to call in tomorrow and see what they can do for me.😉

We went about 12 years ago and stayed in Funchal in the old town. We loved it. We used the buses a lot but getting around the island can be a problem. One side of the island is poor weather but the Funchal side is usually good. Weather pretty decent all year I believe. Amazing mountains, bananas growing everywhere and hardly a piece of flat ground anywhere. You're either going up or going down. Funchal is flatish though. No beaches that I ever saw but if you can get there I believe there are a few a long way from Funchal. If you're not a keen flyer then give it a miss. It has a seriously scary runway built on stilts over the sea. Worth digging around on YouTube to see what I mean.
