I created a family kerfuffle when I refused to go to my nieces first communion. I told my sister I wasn't a Catholic, I thought the whole idea absurd, but hoped everyone had a good day. I wanted no part of it.
According to some Catholics that I know, I'm a Catholic. I was brought up a Catholic, baptised, first confession, first communion and confirmation. Apparently this means that nothing that I actually think and believe can change the fact I'm a Catholic. And then they wonder why some of us think it's mumbo jumbo on a par with worshipping the sun for rising.

I'll go to religious weddings and funerals as necessary, but if anyone asks me, I'm happy to tell them I'm an atheist and discuss why. I draw the line, however, at anything which suggests some kind of deeper belief or adherence to the customs/traditions of whichever religion. Weddings yes, communions, barmitzvahs or whatever ... no chance :okay:

I was brought up a catholic too, but left all that behind me many many years ago. Unfortunately, many of my relatives didn't follow suit.

Not quite sure what this has to do with Catholicism. It's not just Catholics who make vows or renew them...
Nothing other than Catholicism is another example, similar to vows, of something that should be private being shouted about in public just to gain attention.

You seemed to be suggesting that Catholicism was being shouted about in public to gain attention.

I was just wondering where that was happening?
Well Catholicsm has a tendency to take place in large gilded buildings in the centre of cities. I suspect even you can't have missed them. Then there are the church marches and the First Holy Communion days where lots of little children are dressed up to look almost like brides and grooms and paraded off to church. Parties follow for parents to show off their credentials as good catholcs by the fact they've introduced another generation to the same mumbo jumbo that they were indocrtinated in at a similarly young age.

The photos are so much nicer. (I have heard this given as a reason.)

Really? That is bad. My wedding photos are truly abominable. They were taken by someone my mother knew and in return he got an invite to my wedding- he got free food, i got free photos. They are so bad I haven't got a single one displayed anywhere. Having said that, it did not spoil my day and it hasn't ruined my life. Some people need to think about the reason they are getting married not about having the most expensive dress/cake/flowers etc, cos that's all gone the following day.

I didn't say it wasn't public. You were endowing it with an intent... one that seems to reflect your biases more than anything else.
So the building of a cathedral or the parading of a child isn't done to attract attention? If it's not to attract attention, what is it for?

Where?

Fnaar and you are the ones who raised it.

I didn't raise catholiicism I just responded to a post about it.

And where what?

Yes, I was simply using Catholicism as an example. It was part of my upbringing, and is something I left behind. I have a cousin who is a Catholic priest, and many of Mrs Fnaar's wider family are CofE vicars. I enjoy discussing atheism and morality with all of them. We largely have similar vieews, but I don't filter mine through religion.

An expression of faith.
To whom? God? According to the faith, god is omnipotent and omnipresent. You don't need to parade a child or build a church in order to express your faith. Religion should be a communion of "me and my god" not "oh look at me communing with my god"
