Reached 30,000 miles today!

Today crossed over the 30,000 mile mark. Incredible and the joints on my legs feel as good today as they’ve always been! My first ever commute was in June 2009 and I would never have thought I would hit this milestone, but here are some stats.

2013 figures have been extended to the end of 2013 which is an extra 300 or so miles., which unless I loose a leg should be done


Bike costs relates to anything I bought for the bikes, tyres, clothing, accessories, tools etc, but excludes the cost of the Trek 6500 which was bought in 2011 on the Cycle to Work Scheme.

I think I can call myself an experienced cycle commuter, but there have been some great days and some not so great, but I think overall I have no complaints, although I do moan about the weather a LOT!, sorry about that

I have met some great people, cycle with them most days (when I can catch them) and have some good laughs along the way. Certainly a life changing decision to cycle to work, and certainly one of my best decisions ever made in life.

Fantastic. How far is your commute one way? I notice that you have zero car days now does that mean you've got rid of the car now or just more motivated to cycle to work. I must say my stats don't resemble yours but I love commuting by bike, it feels liberating and makes you feel smug.

When I started it was 17 miles each way, then the Guided Bus way Cycle Path opened and it went to 15 each way. I still have a car, but when I started back in 2009 we had 2, one in the garage, which lived in virtually all the time, it never went anywhere, and then the one on the drive we used normally (Long Story!). Anyway in 2010 the car we used normally, which by now just sat on the drive all week, failed the MOT and so I got rid of it. Where I work there is no parking and I don't fancy parking the car down some back street, so going by bike is more convenient, and cheaper than the bus which is a 10 minute walk to the nearest stop, plus the bus ride itself. So bike wins hands down on all fronts really. Its just so much in my routine now that going by any other means is more inconvenient!

When we go out for the Christmas meal at work, I wear the lyrcra underneath my jeans, etc and then when we go home, I just change my shoes, jeans off, cycling jacket on and the clothes in the ruck sack and off. People think I am mad, but why spend 6 quid on bus fare just to get home 20 minutes earlier. Being a tight Yorkshire man, its right up my street!

I work just off Brooklands Avenue in Cambridge so it's only about a 20 mile round trip for me. Don't think I'll be getting close to those distances unless I take a few scenic detours!

Wish I'd started on the stats. They're an interesting read. I like the rain one aswell, doesn't seem that much really, thought there'd have been more wet days. I must admit I do moan about commuting in the rain but I still do it.

Yep rains a lot but i only count it if i get caught but 2012 I thought I was going to need a boat!

They have got proper hills in Yorkshire...I stayed with a mate in Elland a few years ago and it was either up or down...I can see why you moved to cambridge
