No idea what it runs on - something peculiar maybe - Im going to attempt to change the attributes using DOS command on the mapped drive - if that doesnt work I will make a backup of the backup and have a go at that on the C: drive

I'm no expert on SAN's but check under disk manager whether it appears as NTFS file system or UDF. I would guess the latter and if so you'll probably have to use Linux commands, like chmod. I'd be searching the WD knowledge base first and raising a support issue with them in the meantime. It might not be as simple as trying to change file permissions.

It says it is NFTS but ive just been reading some other stuff which made it sound like it was not - maybe W10 only thinks it is NFTS

it seems that it is an old problem with the firmware update - I remember now that I turned off updates when I went on holiday last year - so if i did want to get any files i wouldnt have to wade through an update - Its been plug in and forget - but I changed a few things last week and accessed it via the interface rather than as a mapped drive - the update came up- -

bldy W!0 is demanding to be updated now -

Nearly everything back to normal - can save a new file - can save an old file - however if i go to save a file as a copy with a different name it tells me that the folder is read only - press more options and the save box comes up - just carry on and save it to the supposedly read only folder

No idea what I did to fix it - appears as far as I can tell to be a glitch in W10 but I dont think that is the full story - many thanks Mr @Crackle

While I am on computers - SSDs - Ive got a small cache one in this PC - Ive never seen it do anything - googling seems to suggest that unless the HDD is doing repetitive stuff it doesn't do much

so ?

CPU whirring away 18% - memory 38% - HDD 11% SSD 0% - 13windows open on 2 desktops on 4 screens
  1. Does it do much?
  2. Can you ever see it doing anything?
  3. If it should be visibly doing stuff is there an on/off switch?
