I recently bought a cheap 7 speed derailleur (Shimano RD-FT30) to replace my old Tourney on a 10 year old Giant Sedona.
Problem is I can't work out how to attach the hanger - it doesn't even match the one illustrated in the manual.
See here - compared to the illustrations on the left.

This is what I'm trying to fit it to.

Is it entirely incompatible or am I missing an extra piece of hardware or screw?

Thank you in advance.

It won't fit. The one you've bought is for a different connection. Try this: http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bik...vc:c|adp:1o4&gclid=CK_m6KrgsdQCFUUW0wod36YGYQ

looks to me like the hanger (claw thingy is attached the wrong way round, can you detach it and turn it so the open end faces the other way?

DC Lane hit the nail on the head, the one you've bought is for a bike without a gear hanger whereas your frame has a built in hanger, take it back and swap it.

Thank you all - Is the allen bolt a standard gauge on all shimano derailleurs?
Yes.
