So fortunately right near end of ride something suddenly went badly arwy when I braked. Stopping and checking there's an indentation/ buckle on rear rim. No idea what caused it, I wasn't aware of hitting a stone etc
Anyway, and tips to repair? I'm not at home as away for weekend so I won't get chance to get tyre off until Monday..
Looking at it it seems it might push out or be persuaded somehow. Maybe a gentle tap with pin hammer or mole grips to pull out dent

Any hints gladly received. For information they are aluminium rim brakes Hunt wheels.

Thanks

So long as there is plenty of brake surface, and it's not concave, you can 'correct' it with an adjustable spanner. But make sure you have plenty of rim left and it's not worn. Go carefully.

Did you say "buckle" as in rim moves from side to side when you spin it?

Need to check for any slack spokes near the damaged rim.

Thanks for replies. As for tyre it's a GP5000 and plenty wear left. What I do find with them consistently is they perish/get loose threads before wear indicators are down to minimum. I keep record if when I change consumables so when home I'll check but I'm guessing tyre a year old and probably 4k miles on it. The outside of GP5000 after a while look iffy, perish etc but inside will be fine so I'm confident it's still sound.

As for buckle, no it's not buckled as such that was just what came to mind. Its more of an indentation. The wheel isn't out of line.

That is an impact, and rim brake track looks well worn. Time for a new rim or whole wheel depending on condition of the rest of it.

Definitely need to inspect. As a rim wears it get's weaker and a dent like this can happen from a minor ding. Time to replace. I've dinged brand new rims, so I 'corrected it', but older rims I just replaced - used to get this regular commuting on my fixed gear road bike - I'd go through rims in 18 months.

Can anyone advise what is the minimum safe wall thickness for alloy rims, please?

I’ve had one disintegrate under me some years ago. Fortunately it was a rear wheel, and I was going slowly. I really, really don’t want it ever to happen in a front wheel when descending at speed.

Yeah I had a rim on a commuter bike wear so thin, that it split when braking downhill. Definitely not one to leave. Bikes are disc brake now, which avoids that problem occurring.

Some have wear indicators same as tyres but even then the rims can still be ok as depending on make and model the rims can be relatively thick.
Hard to give a definite answer though on specific thickness, it depends is the unhelpful answer unfortunately.

As you have rim brakes, you should be able to pick up a replacement, second hand for a bargain price.

Try the wanted section on here.
