I have an old mtb which has lateral movement in the rear wheel. The other Saturday I took out the bearings out, cleaned and adjusted to close to how I thought it ran nicely but I still had play in the rear wheel. The cones didn't look like they were worn but maybe the hub is? However, I just read the Sheldon link so I will have another go.

Another other checks I should do?

They need nipping up a tad more if the wheel still wobbles.

Is it solid axle ?. If it is, look very carefully at the threads, particually in the area where the cones and locknut tighten against each other, male sure the threads arent damaged or worn.
I had a similar issue once, adjusted ok, only for play to show itself soon after. The threads were damaged so the locknut didnt have full purchase.

Unlikely, but a possibility.
